Massachusetts Senior Games Information


The Massachusetts Senior Games (MASG) is a member of the National Senior Games Association (NSGA). The NSGA holds a National Championship every two years at selected sites around the country. The 2009 Nationals will be held in San Francisco, California. MASG recognizes the need and desire of senior men and women in our state to be knowledgeable about good health practices and to participate in wholesome and enriching physical activity consistent with their age and abilities. The Senior Games provide people with opportunities for competition, recreation, and camaraderie. The 16th annual Massachusetts summer games competition will be held June 14-17, 2007 at Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts. There are exceptions to the date and site, so please read the registration form carefully.

ELIGIBILITY
The State Senior Games is open to individuals who are 50 years of age or older by December of each year.

The age you will be on December 31, determines the age category in which you must participate.

AGE CATEGORIES
* Team sports: 50+, 55+, 60+, 65+ 70+
* Individual sports: 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85-89, and 90+
** Track & Field / Road Racing invites men and women 40-49 to participate in non-medal competition. Track competition in 2008 will be using Fully Automatic Timing.


SPORT CATEGORIES
*Individual: Men and Women: Archery, Badminton, Billiards, Candle Pin Bowling, Ten Pin Bowling, Cycling, Golf, Horseshoes, Lawn Bowling, Pistol Shooting (Conventional), Race Walking, Racquetball, Road Racing, Shuffleboard, Skiing (downhill and x-country) Swimming, Synchronized Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Track & Field, and Triathlon.


* Doubles and Mixed Doubles : Badminton, Candle Pin Bowling, Ten Pin Bowling, Racquetball,
Shuffleboard, Table Tennis, and Tennis (age determined by the age of the youngest partner).
* Team : Men and Women : Basketball, Hockey, Softball, and Volleyball.
Entrant responsible for team formation.
Entrant must be part of a team at time of entry.
* Co-Ed teams : Bocce, Lawn Bowling, and Line Dancing (exhibition only)


TRANSPORTATION
All athletes must arrange for their own transportation.


INCLEMENT WEATHER PLANS
The Massachusetts Senior Games reserves the right to cancel or postpone events in case of inclement weather or other extenuating circumstances. Any schedule changes will be announced at the sites and at the check-in headquarters.

AWARDS
Official Massachusetts Senior Games medals will be presented to Massachusetts first, second, and third place competitors in each age category for men and women. Out-of-state participants will also receive medals for placing first, second, or third if appropriate. Medals will be presented at the event sites after conclusion of the event.


PROTEST PROCEDURE
Any person or team desiring to make a protest with regard to any aspect of a sport competition at the Massachusetts Senior Games shall make such protest to the Event Manager of the sports competition in question. Initial protests may be oral or written. If an oral protest is denied, a written protest may subsequently be submitted to the Event Manager provided it is done within 12 hours of the circumstances causing the protest. If a written protest is submitted, the Event Manager will evaluate the protest and render a decision. If the Event Manager’s decision in response to a written protest is such that a further hearing is desired, a protest may be made to the Massachusetts Senior Games Coordinator within four hours of the Event Manager’s decision. This may only be done after an Event Manager denies a written protest. All decisions by the Massachusetts Senior Games Coordinator are final and not subject to further appeal.


BANQUET AND OPENING CEREMONIES

This year's banquet and opening ceremonies will be held in Cheney Hall at Springfield College. Doors open at 5:30 for socialization and dinner will start at 6:00. Speakers will include a representative of the presenting sponsor, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, a representative of the President's office of Springfield College, and the Honorary Senior Games Chairperson.
